Gabriela was born on July 30, 1997 in the city of Puruándiro in Michoacán, Mexico to Elias Lemus-Aguilar and Maria Aurora Cancino. Gabriela moved to the United States with her parents and older brother, Elias Jr., at a very young age. She continued to be an amazing daughter and sister. Gabriela often helped her parents by caring for her younger siblings as they came along. Her intelligence and perseverance took her to college, where she continued to be a person who loved life and loved helping others. Her aspirations, while studying at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, were to become a math teacher; one who would help underconfident students overcome the horrors of trigonometry and calculus. She was, unfortunately, diagnosed with brain cancer her second year of college, at age 19. However, not even this horrific news stopped her from continuing life. She unbelievably continued school and even continued her volunteer work while in a wheelchair. She did not complain about her devastating illness; not even once. She fought fiercely until the end. Gabriela Lemus-Cancino left us with the lesson of having strength and perseverance. She was a true warrior.
Those left to honor her memory include her parents; siblings: Elias Lemus-Cancino, Omaha, NE, Alejandro Lemus-Cancino, South Sioux City, NE, Vanessa Lemus-Cancino, South Sioux City, NE, Fatima Lemus-Cancino, South Sioux City, NE; boyfriend Jimmy Nguen, South Sioux City, NE; and many family members and close friends.
She is preceded in death by her infant brother, Pedro Lemus-Cancino and three very special grandparents.
