Sioux City - Gary Robert Monkelien, 70, of Sioux City died Sunday, May 18, 2014, at a local nursing home.
A celebration of life service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Andel officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation with the family will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City. Online condolences may be made to the family at

Gary was born on Aug. 26, 1943, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Robert and Thelma (Johnson) Monkelien. He attended Grant Township School through the eighth grade and graduated from Pocahontas (Iowa) High School in 1961. He went to work for the Pocahontas Lumber Yard and met his bride, Gloria Shriner.
They were united in marriage on Aug. 14, 1966, at Rolfe Presbyterian Church and settled in Pocahontas until 1967, when they moved to a farm southwest of town. Gary farmed until 1990, then worked in manufacturing and drove semi. They moved to Sioux City in 2000. Gary worked for John Morrell driving truck and also for M&M Construction driving truck.
He was an active member of Morningside Lutheran Church. Gary loved old cars and old tractors. He liked to take his 1969 Chevy Impala to various cruise nights around Siouxland. Gary loved spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria Monkelien of Sioux City; daughter, Suzy and her husband, Kip Turnquist of Sioux City, and their children, Jessica and Jami; daughter, Sheila and her husband, Nick Gladue of Sioux Falls, S.D., and their children, Shelby, Collin and Ethan; son, Kent and his wife, Holly Monkelien of Sioux City, and their children, Jaden, Nikona and Paxton; daughter, Gina and her husband, Luke Dondlinger of Sioux City, and their children, Aysah, Olivia and Chloe; brother, Dean and his wife, Melissa Monkelien of Fair Haven Md.; sister, Janet and Bill Wing of McLean, Va.; brother, Dave and his wife, Renita Monkelien of Sioux Falls; sister-in-law, Ginger Ernst of Pocahontas; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Thelma Monkelien; his father in-law and mother in-law, George and Stevie Shriner; and a brother-in-law, Dave Ernst.
