MOVILLE, Iowa -- Gaylin R. Harmes, 87, of Moville died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Moville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Moville.
Gaylin was born Nov. 30, 1923, in Moville, the son of Richard and Amanda (Jahn) Harmes. He attended school and graduated from Moville High School in 1942. Gaylin joined the U.S. Army in March 1944, serving overseas and receiving the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on March 1, 1945.
Gaylin married Greta Thomsen on May 2, 1955 in Dakota City. They owned and operated The Quick Lunch Cafe in Moville. Gaylin then went to work as an over-the-road truck driver for more than 52 years, retiring in 2003.
He was a member of the Moville United Methodist Church. Gaylin was also a member of the American Legion Wink-Sparks Post 303, the Disabled American Veterans, was a charter member of the Meadows Golf Club and with the Moville Fire Department for more than 30 years. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing and going to Winn-A-Vegas Casino.
He is survived by his wife, Greta Harmes of Moville; two sister-in-laws, Joy Harmes of Lawton, Iowa, and Milray Harmes of Newport Beach, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Giles, Glenn and Gene.
