George Thomas Harrington, 89, died at the Correctionville Care Center on Tuesday, July 30 after a long battle with dementia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City, Iowa on Friday, August 2 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. David Hemann as celebrant. Burial will follow at Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Salix. Visitation will be Thursday, August 1 at the Christy-Smith Funeral Home - Larkin Chapel, 2320 Outer Drive, Sioux City, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. with the vigil to take place at 7:00 p.m.
George was born in Salix on August 7, 1929 to Clinton and Margaret (Reynolds) Harrington. He graduated from Saint Joseph’s Catholic school in 1947 with three classmates. George was a hard worker on the farm and took great pride in everything he did. He and Mary were united in marriage at Saint Michael Catholic Church on June 14, 1949. Together, they raised 7 children, starting in Climbing Hills and later moving to their farm north of Leeds. He supplemented the farm income by holding many jobs over the years, but his love was always farming, raising his hogs, cattle, and chickens. George always had a passion for learning and knowledge, which he passed along to his children. He had many talents, but he was a genius with numbers and finances. He bought and sold numerous farms over the years and loved going to area farm auctions.
George leaves his loving wife of 70 years, Mary (Uhl) Harrington; his daughters, Kathy Facer, Barbara Thomas, Charlene Maaske and her husband Steve, Susan Naddy and her husband Bill, Anne Petersen and her husband David; sons, Michael, Thomas and his wife Jean; grandchildren, Nicole Facer, Jessica Wolzen (Steve), Rachel Knowlton (Sam), Lorelei Goodman (Bryan), Christopher Thomas (Jenny), Adam Thomas, Greg Maaske (Shannon), Sara Freve (Dan), Rigel Harrington, Zachary, April, Scott, Ryan, Kyle and Molly Harrington, Joseph Petersen, and Mark Petersen (Amy).8 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Audrey Kurth and Julie Winters; 2 brothers, Dan Harrington and Kevin Harrington.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Harrington and Richard Harrington; one sister, Lenore Truitt; and grandson, Kirk Petersen.
