George Newton Martin

BRONSON, Iowa -- George N. Martin, 81, of Bronson passed away Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, 1801 Morningside Ave., with Pastor Merrill Muller officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to www.christysmith.com .

George Newton Martin was born Nov. 21, 1927, to Frank and Alberta (Smith) Martin in Dunlap, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army from March 1946 to September 1947.

George and Anabelle Jensen were married on Jan. 1, 1952, in Sioux City, and were together for more than 20 years. He later married Bernette Lien in Sioux City on Jan. 17, 1981. George worked in northern Minnesota in the iron mines and at Cudahy Packing Plant in Sioux City until it burned down. He then went to work for Sunnybrook Nursery as a landscaper for 36 years, retiring in 1991.

In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, working in his garden and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

George is survived by son, Alan and wife, Gloria of Bronson; daughter, Christine Foster of Sioux City; son, Kevin and wife, Kelly of Sioux City; daughter, Jean and husband, Dale Frank of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Harriet and husband, LeRoy Gonnerman of Luverne, Minn., Claudine and husband, Walt Conners, and Mary and husband, Steve Atkins, all of Blue Springs, Mo.; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Anabelle and Bernette; grandsons, Justin Martin and Andre Verbeski; brothers, Robert and Charles; sisters, Betty Adam, Arlene Cornelius and Wanita Martin; and a son in infancy.
