JEFFERSON, S.D. -- George R. "Bob" Norton, 75, of Jefferson died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at the Veterans Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. following a brief illness.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Catholic Church in Jefferson, with the Rev. David Roehrich officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. The body will be cremated following the visitation. Bob was born Dec. 15, 1934, in Sioux City. He was raised in Sioux City and attended Sioux City schools. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He married Mary Josephine Luebben on June 12, 1954, at St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City. She died may 2, 1991, in Sioux City. After his marriage, the family lived in South Sioux City until 1970, when they moved to the Jefferson area. He was a truck driver and owned and operated the Norton Grain Co. He also farmed in the Jefferson area. He retired in the mid 1990s.
After his retirement, he did a lot of traveling on his Goldwing motorcycle. He made his starting point for his traveling in Arizona. He moved back to the Jefferson area in 2009. He was a member of the B.P. Coffee Club in Jefferson. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and golfing.
Survivors include his son, George R. Norton III of Jefferson; his mother, Ferne Norton of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Tami A. Norton of Elk Point, S.D.; six grandchildren, Robert, Paige, Jenna, Maggie, Allie and Emily Norton; a brother and his wife, Jon and Maureen Norton of Salix, Iowa; two sisters, Janice (Jim, deceased) Johnson of Madison, Wis., and Marilyn Dermit and her husband, Bill of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his father, George R. Norton; and his son, Michael Lee Norton.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
