George “Jeep” Benjamin Whitmore, 76, of Sioux City, died Monday, July 27, 2015, at his brother's home after a several-month illness.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jill Clem of Rustin Avenue United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
George was born May 6, 1939, in Kansas City, Mo., the oldest son of Alfred and Helen (Heenan) Whitmore. He came to Sioux City as a young child. He graduated from East High School in 1957. George served in the U.S. Air Force from 1957 until 1961.
He married Connie Borrall on April 6, 1967, in Elk Point, S.D. They made their home in Sioux City. Connie died Sept. 11, 2006, in Sioux City.
George was a bricklayer working for several construction companies in the Sioux City area. Following that employment, he worked for the State of Iowa.
He was in the Air National Guard for 21 years and retired as senior master staff sergeant in 2002.
George was a longtime member of Rustin Avenue United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Kammy (Jerry) Walker of Akron, Iowa; three grandchildren who were his pride and joy, Chase, Autumn and Bryce, all of Akron; three brothers, Tom (Betty) Whitmore of Sergeant Bluff, Raymond Whitmore of Parkston, S.D., and Mike Whitmore of Aurora, Colo.; and three sisters, Judy (Wendall) Anderson of Phoenix, Ariz., Helen Gilliland of San Antonio, Texas, and Mary Morey of Branson, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Alfred Jr.; a grandchild, "baby Angel;" and a brother-in-law, Mike Gilliland.
The family thanks the Hospice of Siouxland staff for kind and compassionate care during the last four months of George's life. With their help, his wish of staying at home with his family was fulfilled.
