George James Wineman

George J. Wineman, 94, of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church, with the Rev. Armand Bertrand officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a rosary at 6 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
George was born April 28, 1920, in Fargo, N.D., the son of George and Anna (Kneip) Wineman. He was raised in Wayzata, Minn., and graduated from Wayzata High School. He joined the Army Air Corps during World War II, and also served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea. He was a member of the 8th Air Force, 39 Bomber Group. He was awarded a Bronze Star and a Presidential Citation.
On Feb. 20, 1942, he married Irene Tokarczyk in Sioux City. Irene died Sept. 23, 2007, in Sioux City.
He served with the Sioux City Fire Department for 25 years. While with the fire department, he did masonry and concrete work on his off days. After he retired, he worked at Morningside College, and was a boiler operator at St. Luke's Hospital.
He was a former member of St. Francis Church and the American Legion, Monahan Post 64.
George was known for his story telling, his deep rich voice and his great love for his grandchildren.
Survivors include his daughter, Nancy (Dan) Protexter of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Danielle of Chicago, Ill., Ned of Des Moines, Iowa, Laurel at the University of Iowa, Joe at U.N.L.V. and serving with the Nevada Air National Guard, and Julia, Jake and Nate at home; and his good friends, Jim, Kathy and Jimmy Rehal.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his son, John; his brother, John; and his sister, Faye Wineman.
