Gerald "Jerry" Lucken Curry, 92, lifelong resident of South Sioux City, passed away July 25, 2016 at a local hospital.
Private family visitation to be held at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City on Saturday, July 30, 2016 from 9:00 AM-10:00 AM. Funeral service to be held at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 10:30 AM, with Pastor Gary Panko officiating. Interment will be at Dakota City Cemetery.
He was born June 3, 1924 to Wallace and Ann Curry. Jerry attended South Sioux City High School, class of 1942. Jerry married Pearl Elaine Hansen on October 14, 1946. To this union, three children were born. Lieutenant Junior Grade Gerald Curry was a United States Navy veteran serving in the South Pacific during World War II. Jerry was a devoted member of First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City. He studied at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Harvard, Colorado College (Navy V-12), and Morningside College where he earned his degree in business administration. His legacy of active community leadership is proven by his accomplishments: Founding Director at Dakota County State Bank, South Sioux City Council member for 11 years, Member of the Siouxland Economic Development Corporation, Director of the Sioux City Boat Club, Director of So Soo Development Inc., Owner and developer of South Ridge Plaza, Member of the Abu Bekr Shriners, Alpha Masonic Lodge Master Mason, President of the Tri-State Coaches and Officials Association, Member of The American Legion, and Board of Directors at St. Luke’s Hospital. He owned and operated his family business, Curry Floor & Acoustics Co. in South Sioux City for over 24 years. Jerry also started the first coin operated laundromat in the area, built new multi-family housing units and remodeled several others, and donated 5.5 acres of land next to Crystal Cove to the City of South Sioux for the purpose of a public park. He was recently recognized for his contribution when South Sioux City dedicated it as "Curry Park." Jerry was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing cards and dominoes with friends. Jerry dedicated his life to his three most important passions: his loving family, his contribution to charity, and his enduring commitment to his community.
Survivors include his devoted and loving wife of 69 years, Pearl Curry; his three children, Peggy (James) Swanson, Terry "TC" (Lori) Curry, and Lance Curry; his grandchildren, Tanya (Steve) Schreier, James Swanson Jr., Theresa Gunderson, Benjamin (Jennifer) Curry, Sydney Curry, Jake Curry; great-grandchildren, Becky Haidsiak, Dakota Schreier, Ethan Schreier, Logan Schreier, Gage Curry, and Lennon Curry. Special family members include Trang, Michelle, Christopher, and Phillip Huynh.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Ann Curry; and his grandson, Tyrone Bridenbaugh
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the City of South Sioux City for Curry Park, part of the Crystal Cove complex.
