SIOUX CITY -- Rev. Gerald M. Fisch, 79, of Sioux City died Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cathedral of the Epiphany. Monsignor Mark Duchaine will be the principal celebrant. Major celebrants will be the Rev. Paul-Louis Arts, Monsignor Roger Augustine, the Rev. Larry Burns, the Rev. Jerry Cosgrove, the Rev. Paul Kelly, the Rev. Mike Larkin, Monsignor Gerald Lyon, the Rev. Brad Pezel, the Rev. John Thomas, the Rev. Thomas Topf and other priests of the Sioux City Diocese. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. The Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in handling the arrangements.
The Rev. Fisch was born Oct, 25, 1931, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, the son of Dr. Gerald and Anna (Dougherty) Fisch. He was raised in Rock Rapids and graduated from Rock Rapids High School in 1949. He attended St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minn., St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, and Mount St. Bernard Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa.
He was ordained to the priesthood on June 1, 1957, at Cathedral of the Epiphany. As a priest of the Diocese of Sioux City, he served as a assistant pastor at St. Patrick Parish in Estherville, Iowa, pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Livermore, Iowa, Sacred Heart Parish in Alvord, Iowa, Immaculate Conception Parish in Moville, Iowa, St. Michael Parish in Kingsley, Iowa, St. Mary Parish in Larchwood, Iowa, and at Sacred Heart Parish in Ida Grove, Iowa. The Rev. Fisch retired in April of 2001 and had lived in Sioux City thereafter.
He is survived by his brother, Charles T. "Ted" Fisch of Redondo Beach, Calif.; and two sisters, Catherine Susanne Hutler of Rancho Mirage, Calif., and Lenore and Robert Vasey of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
