Gerald Eugene "Gerry" Thomas, 81, of Sioux City passed away on Dec. 25, 2015 at his home.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. The Rev. Merrill Muller will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Arlington Township Cemetery, Moville, Iowa. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Gerry was born on Dec. 7, 1934, in Sioux City, the son of Ralph and Dorothy (Peters) Thomas. He was raised in the rural Moville area and later the family moved into Moville. He attended country school and Moville High School. Gerry entered the U.S. Navy and served for a total of 20 years, retiring from the service in August 1969. While in the service, he served on 12 ships during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was awarded the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, four Good Conduct Medals, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, China Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
After he left the service he joined the Woodbury County Sheriff's office and served there for 14 years. Gerry then drove a truck for a short while and later joined the U.S. Marshal's Service, where he worked until 1992.
Gerry married Juanita Stubbs and they later divorced. That marriage was blessed with four children. He married Linda Johnson on Oct. 24, 1987, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple lived in several different locations and returned to Sioux City in 2013. Gerry was an avid reader, enjoyed guns, horses, motorcycles and he loved to travel. While living in New Mexico, he was very active with the V.F.W.
He is survived by his wife, Linda of Sioux City; his children, Michael Thomas, Pam (Ben) Cassens of Anthon, Iowa, Trish (Greg) Tempel of Joplin, Mont., Shannon Thomas of Omaha, Russ Johnson of Sioux City, Jon Johnson of Sioux City, and Paul Johnson of Bagley, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his sister and brothers, LaRae Lyons of Moville, Larry (Pat) Thomas of Ashland, Neb., and Steve (Sam) Thomas of Moville; and 10 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother-in-law, Gene Lyons; and a nephew, Seth Thomas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of Siouxland.
