MOVILLE, Iowa -- Gerald Waldman, 87, formerly of Moville, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at Sunrise Retirement Home in Sioux City.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Moville Evangelical Church in Moville, with the Rev. Brian Hotrum, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery at Moville, with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 303. Gerald was born on March 23, 1922, in Moville, the son of Edward B. and Dorothy A. (Waack) Waldman. He attended elementary school in Moville, and graduated from the Moville High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and fought in France, Belgium and Germany and also fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He married Maxine Viola Christensen of Steven, S.D., on Dec. 27, 1945, in Dakota City. She died on March 4, 2008, in Sioux City. Gerald was employed by the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad for 44 years. He retired as foreman of the bridge and building department in 1982. Gerald had lived the majority of his life in Moville and had moved to Sioux City about six months ago.
He was a member of the Moville Evangelical Church. He was a church layleader, a Sunday school teacher, a member of the board of trustees and the parish committee, a head usher and active in the men's prayer breakfast. He was also a member of American Legion Post 303 of Moville. Gerald was an avid gardener and sports fan and especially enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and Tiger Woods. But, most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
Survivors include two sons, Darrell Waldman of Kingsley, Iowa, and Donald Waldman and his wife, Marlene of South Sioux City; a daughter, Debra Pueppke and her husband, Tim of Oto, Iowa; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Waldman and his wife, Susan of Chicago, Ill., and Paul Waldman of Moville; and a sister, Pauline Waldman of Moville
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister, Elaine Gregory; and three brothers, Kenneth, Floyd and Jack Waldman.
Pallbearers will be Brian, Jeff and Brent Waldman, Phillip and Jerod Lytton and Paul Waldman. Honorary pallbearers will be Mitch Carrier and Glen Holst.
Gerald was a very generous and caring person and showed his love to each one of his family, all of his many years and we will all miss him.
