Sergeant Bluff - Gladys Jean Ellery, 89, of Milford, Iowa, formerly of Sergeant Bluff, passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at a care facility Milford.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Community United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Gladys was born on May 12, 1923, in Hawarden, Iowa, to Charles and Dora (Ryder) Oehlerking. She attended and graduated from Sergeant Bluff High School in 1941. While in high school, she was on the high school clarinet quartet that placed second in band nationals. Following high school, she attended and graduated from Iowa State with a bachelors of science degree in 1945. She was a home economics teacher. She taught in Sloan, Winterset, Keokuk and Moville, Iowa schools.
She married James E. Ellery on Sept. 26, 1948 in Keokuk, Iowa. He passed away on Aug. 30, 1992 in Sioux City
Gladys served as a scout leader for her children’s Cub Scout troop. She was also involved and a longtime member of Community United Methodist Church. She also served on the Methodist Women’s Fellowship committee and several other committees. Gladys also enjoyed her children and grandchildren’s activities. Visiting with family and friends. Playing a good game of bridge, camping, traveling and being involved in the neighborhood club.
Survivors include her daughter, Vicki and Bruce Johnson of Spirit Lake, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jamie and DiAnna Johnson of Spirit Lake, Neil and Sarah Johnson of Palm Desert, Calif., and Nicolle and Joel Smith of Grinnell, Iowa; four great-grandchildren, Blake Johnson and Ally Montgomery of Spirit Lake, and Taylor and Kaitlyn Smith of Grinnell; a brother, Charles and Barb Oehlerking of Sergeant Bluff; three nephews, Mark and Sue Oehlerking of Waukee, Iowa, Tom and Mary Anne Oehlerking of Sergeant Bluff, and Jon and Lori Oehlerking of Sergeant Bluff; and a niece, Cindy and Monte Wagner of Wilmington, N.C.
Preceding her in death was her husband, James; and a son, Charles l. Ellery in 1974.
