Gladys M. Wachter, 94, of Sioux City, formerly of Hinton, died Monday, Jan. 11, 2016, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Hinton, with the Rev. Steven Stoll officiating. Burial will be in Rademacher Cemetery, near Hinton. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Gladys was born on March 29, 1921, on a farm east of Hinton, the daughter of Herman and Helen (Hardersen) Diediker. She attended country school near Hinton.
Gladys married Carl Wachter on Aug. 8, 1942, at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Upon Carl's return from the service, the couple made their home in Hinton. They moved to Rock Branch in 1952, Kingsley, Iowa, in 1961 and to the farm near Hinton in 1968. Carl died in September 1987. Gladys remained on the farm until moving to Northern Hills in 2006.
Gladys was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and its ladies organizations. She was also an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include three sons, Dennis (Linda) Wachter of Hinton, Duane (Mary-Margaret) Wachter of Hinton, and Gary Wachter of West Des Moines; a daughter, Carleen (Edward) Hoelscher of Hinton; nine grandchildren, Marc (Sandy) Wachter, Derek (Amy) Wachter, Marci (Roy) Hullinger, Matthew (Sandi) Wachter, Susie (Matt) Leary, Marti (Michael) Cowman, Brady (Leigh Ann) Wachter, Bradley (Rena) Hoelscher and Steven (Coleen) Hoelscher; 24 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Shirley Woolworth of El Cerito, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; great-granddaughter, Kayla Wachter; and a daughter-in-law, Carol Wachter.
