Grace M. Schouten

Sioux City - Grace Margaret Schouten, 101, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Harold Werley officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley, Iowa. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Grace, the oldest child of Henry and Anna (Prins) Mulder, was born on June 27, 1912, at the family farm near Alton, Iowa. She was raised primarily in Sioux Center, Iowa, and graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1931. She then entered nurse's training at the old St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City, graduating as a registered nurse in 1934. In her nursing career, Grace worked at the Hull, Iowa, hospital, Methodist Hospital in Sioux City, Morningside College, and Sunrise Manor Nursing Home.
On Nov. 12, 1941, Grace married Elmer Schouten. They made their home in Rock Valley, and began a family giving birth to sons, Bill, Bob, and Don. The family moved to Sioux City in 1952.
Grace was a 62-year member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she was active in circle and volunteered for years as Sunday School secretary. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, reading, playing bridge, cooking, and crossword puzzles.
Left to cherish Grace’s memory are her son, Bill Schouten and his wife, Vera; daughter-in-law, Karen Schouten; son, Don Schouten and his wife, Pat; sister, Ida Storer; brother, Elmer Mulder (Betty); sisters-in-law, LaVonne and Hilde Mulder; grandchildren, Matt Schouten (Amber), Adam Schouten (Josie), Glenn Schouten (Kelly), Susan Bailey (Dave), and Margaret Young (Anthony); stepgrandson, Jeff Kamminga; great-grandchildren, Bob, Marian, Thomas, Jake, Grace, James, Clare, and Lucas; several nieces and nephews; and dear friends, Jeannette Beckel and Dorothy Hanson.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer; son, Bob; stepdaughter, Joan Kamminga; stepgrandson, Gary Kamminga; siblings, Harriet, Jim, Harold, and Bernie Mulder; and a very special friend, Rose Weekly.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to the family for future designation.
