Greta Harmes, 82, of Moville died Monday, June 16, 2014, at Kingsley Nursing and Rehab Center in Kingsley, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Moville United Methodist Church , with the Rev. Ed Frank officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery . Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Moville.
Greta was born on April 14, 1932 , in Germany , the daughter of Johann and Emmey (Feddersen) Thompsen. She grew up and attended school in Bredstedt , Germany .
Greta married Gaylin Harmes on May 2, 1955 in Dakota City . They made their home in Moville, where they owned and operated the Quick Lunch Cafe. Greta later worked at a turkey hatchery for 10 years, then, waitressed at Judy’s Feed Bunk and Misty’s for more than 30 years. Gaylin died on Aug. 2, 2011 .
Greta was a member of Moville United Methodist Church . She and Gaylin were two of the original members of the Meadows Golf Course in Moville. Greta loved being outside working in her yard and flower beds. She also liked playing word search puzzles, cards, and going to WinnaVegas Casino.
Survivors include one brother, Hein and Tina Thompsen of Germany; one sister, Anni Marie and Max Petersen of Germany; nieces, JoEllen and Phil Nugent of Sioux City, Christie and Brian Kramer of Aurora, Colo., and Kim Harmes of Newport Beach, Calif.; nephews, Scott and Dee Harmes of Valley Center, Calif., Danny and Annette Harmes of Moville, Kirk and Tami Harmes of Tempe, Ariz., and Brent and Lisa Harmes of Lakewood, Colo.; Grandnieces and nephews, Tawn Nugent and Fran Jess, Tate Nugent and fiancee, Briana and daughter, Lilliana, Matt and Katie Kramer, Roy and Christina Harmes, Nicole and TR Glassgow, Austin Harmes, Kelly and Adam McElrath, and Jill Harmes and friend, Mike; great-grandnieces and nephews, Addison and Alexa McElrath, Taylor Glassgow, Zachary and Josh Kramer, and Rosie and Samantha Harmes; several nieces and nephews in Germany; other relatives; and dear friends. Greta was also a special part of the Bud Beaver family and the Loren Neville family.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gaylin; a son, Robert Joe; and brothers, Manfred and Otto Thompsen
