Sioux City - Gretchen E. Van Every, 97, of Sioux City died Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at her home.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes.
Gretchen was born on Feb. 15, 1917, in Battle Creek, Neb., to Gaylord and Nellie (Pierce) Lintt. She lived in Battle Creek until she was 10 years old, then moved with her family to Page, Neb. Gretchen moved to Sioux City in 1937.
She married Leslie Van Every on May 6, 1939, in O'Neill, Neb. They made their home in Gordon, Neb., before moving to Sioux City in 1941. Gretchen worked at Ted’s Cafe for several years. Leslie died on Dec. 18, 2002.
Gretchen was a member of Riverside Senior Citizens. She enjoyed cooking, reading and crocheting and had crocheted afghans for the Ronald McDonald House.
She is survived by her daughter, Stella Serviss of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Tammy (Michael) Asher of Kernersville, N.C., Teresa (Dan) Leonard of Salix, Iowa, Rick Serviss (Ellie Benson) of Sioux City, Leslie Serviss of Sioux City, and Douglas (Jessica) Sliter of Sioux City; eight great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Ron and Nancy Davis of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Sliter; two brothers, Burdette and Gene Lintt; and son-in-laws, Nolan Serviss and Harold Sliter.
