Gwendolyn Patricia Plantz, 90, passed away April 3, 2024, at a local nursing home in Sioux City, Iowa.
A memorial service will take place at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Larkin Chapel (2320 Outer Dr. N.) with Major Marlys Anderson, Corps Officer of the Salvation Army, officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior. Her final resting place will be Logan Park Cemetery.
Gwendolyn was born on March 17, 1934, to Arthur and Vida (Stockwell) Olson in Sioux City, Iowa. She attended Sioux City Public Schools and remained a lifelong resident of Sioux City. On January 19, 1963, Gwendolyn was united in marriage to Guy Plantz in South Sioux City, Nebraska.
Gwendolyn cared deeply for her family and community. She was a homemaker and foster parent, caregiver for Home Instead, and secretary at the Salvation Army, where she was an active member. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing clothes, baking and decorating wedding cakes for her three girls, and tending to her flowers in her garden.
Survivors include her daughters: LeAnne (Russ) Schnee of Sloan, Iowa, Candy (Howard) Comstock of Sioux City, Iowa, Glenda (Steve) Gormally of Sioux City, Iowa; her son: Michael Plantz of Sioux City, Iowa; her foster children: Evette, Robert, and Shaina; 7 grandchildren: Beth (Mike) Hanks, Terry (fiancé Ashley) Comstock, Shain (Angie) Hanks, Keith (Angie) Comstock, Brandi Hanks, Cory (Kaleigh) Gormally, Steffanie (Rob) Danke; 28 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Guy; grandson Shawn Hanks; great-grandchild Bryson Brinkman; 3 brothers: Arthur “Jr.”, Milton Olson, and Melvin Olson; an infant sister, Audrey, and sister Shirley Anderson; and special friend, Lyle Carnes.
