JoAnn Owens, 75, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, 1801 Morningside Ave., with Pastor Floyd Brown officiating. No visitation is scheduled. Online condolences may be sent to christysmith.com.
Helen JoAnn Crosswhite was born Dec. 15, 1932, to Fred C. and Helen (Patterson) Crosswhite in Sioux City. She attended and graduated from Central High School in Sioux City with the class of 1950. She received her master's degree in healthcare administration in Chapel Hill, N.C.
She was married to Melvin Owens and worked as a hospital administrator in New York, returning to Sioux City in 1993.
JoAnn was a member of Women of Excellence, being named Woman of the Year in 1999, Woodbury County Drug Court, Quota Club, a board member of Human Rights, volunteered for Opportunities Unlimited and Senior Companion, was chairperson of Care Review at Indian Hills, the Police Department Citizens Academy 5 volunteer and CSADV. For her many hours and years of public service and volunteer work, she was recognized by then Governor Vilsack and in her honor, a flag was flown over the State Capitol for 30 days.
Survivors include her grandchildren, Randy and his wife, Danyell Anderson of Omaha, Elijah Anderson and his significant other, Ashley Eck, Darnel Anderson, JoVann Anderson, Marissa Anderson, Latasha Anderson and Catessa Stevens, all of Sioux City; great-grandchildren, Cayden, Braxton and Madison Anderson of Omaha, and Rhayana Anderson of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Cathy and her husband, Doyle Stevens of Sioux City; and a niece, Michele Crane of South Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin; and sons, Calvin and Frederick Randall.
