Hallie L. Sargisson (Montange)

SIOUX CITY -- Hallie L. Sargisson, 103, of Sioux City, formerly of Salix, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Salix United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Catie Newman officiating. Private graveside services will be in Graceland Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with an Order of the Eastern Star service at 5 p.m. and a prayer service at 5:30 p.m. with the Rev. Martha Anderson officiating, all at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com .

Hallie was born Jan. 1, 1907, in Little Egypt Township, Climbing Hill, Iowa, the daughter of George H. and Julia (Johnson) Montange. The family moved to the Luton and Salix, Iowa area when she was a child. She attended school in Onawa, Iowa and Salix. She graduated from Salix High School. She then attended the National Business Training School in Sioux City. She had lived in the Sergeant Bluff and Salix area most of her life.

She married Walton C. Sargisson on March 3, 1924, in Dakota City. He died Sept. 25, 1975, in Sioux City. She was active with the Democrat Party of Iowa. She served as a state representative for one term. She then served as the Woodbury County Treasurer from 1974 to 1990. She moved to Sioux City eight and one half years ago to live at NorthPark Senior Living Apartment. The family is grateful for all the care and love that she received there.

She served as president of the Luton School board and chairman of the hot lunch program. She also served as president of the Woodbury County Library Board. She was an instigator in getting the Bookmobile for Woodbury County.

She was a member of Salix United Methodist Church and the Salix Study Club. She was president of the Salix United Methodist Church board. She was honored as the Iowa Woman of the Year. She was also listed as a Woman of History for Sioux City in 2008.

She was a 64-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a Worthy Matron of Athena Chapter 460 of Sloan, Iowa. She also was a member of the Rose Croix Morningside Chapter 502 O.E.S. She was Grand Electa for the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star for the State of Iowa in 1961. She was a district instructor of O.E.S. She also was an instructor for the Rainbow Girls and the Daughters of the Nile. She was a member of the Daughters of the Nile, the Red Cross board, the Goodwill Auxiliary, the Gospel Mission, the Sioux City Women's Club and chairman for the Iowa Federation of Women's Clubs.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Jane Nielsen of Le Mars, Iowa, and Julianne Jorstad of Ames, Iowa; a son, Payne G. Sargisson of Salix; a daughter-in-law, Rita Sargisson of Salix; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a nephew, Charles Montange of Seattle, Wash.; a niece, Dorothy Hodgman of Kansas City, Mo.; and a grandnephew, Richard Hodgman of Kansas City, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son that they raised, William C. Beck; two sisters; three brothers; two sons-in-law; and a daughter-in-law.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be LeLand Sargisson Sr., Charles Montange, LaVern Montange, Richard Chilton, Roger Rand, Todd Rand, Phil Robinson, Richard Hodgman and Ed Hannen.
