Harold F. "Bud" Schwagerl

March 9, 1920 — July 3, 2010

SIOUX CITY -- Harold F. "Bud" Schwagerl, 90, died Saturday, July 3, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center following a long illness.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel with Merlyne Smith officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Floyd Cemetery.
Bud was born March 9, 1920, to Wencil F. and Pearl C. (Schlattman) Schwagerl in Browns Valley, Minn. He graduated from Central High School in Montevideo, Minn., in 1938 and attended the University of Minnesota for three years.
After working in his father's wholesale grocery store from 1942-1949 in Montevideo, he moved to Sioux City in 1949 to work as an auditor for the Iowa State Tax Commission, which later was renamed the Iowa Department of Revenue. He retired in 1985 as the Northwest Area supervisor.
He married Phyllis A. Thorngreen of Sioux City on Oct. 1, 1951, in Willmar, Minn., and they made their home in Sioux City. She died Dec. 23, 2003. He was a former member of First Baptist Church.
In Montevideo, he was a charter member of the Lions Club. From 1939 through 1951, he played the tenor saxophone and clarinet in dance bands. He obtained his pilot's license and co-owned a small plane.
For more than 50 years, he faithfully fed the birds in his back yard. He loved his pet Dachshunds and was a longtime supporter of the Siouxland Humane Society. He and Phyl enjoyed their annual trips to visit their relatives in Las Vegas, Nev., and California and looked forward to spending time on the south shore of Spirit Lake with the Zerschling family.
He and Phyl enjoyed playing cards and cheering for the Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins, along with the Minnesota Vikings. Bud had a great sense of humor, often joking his home remodeling projects resulted in "a vast number of monstrosities." Other hobbies included photography, listening to jazz and building model cars.
For many years, he was the chief caregiver for Phyl, who had M.S.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, James and Vivian Schwagerl of Simi Valley, Calif.; four nieces and their families: Peggy Ferralli of Simi Valley; Julie Reed of Palmdale, Calif.; Jo Vasquez of Lancaster, Calif., and Mary Garrett of Chester, Calif.; three nephews and their families: David Schwagerl of Reedley, Calif.; John Schwagerl of Marietta, Ga., and David Schandorff of Las Vegas; and two godchildren, Lynn Zerschling of Sioux City and Jim Zerschling of Dallas, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
Memorials may be made in his name to the Siouxland Humane Society, 1015 Tri View Ave., Sioux City, IA 51103.
