Sioux City - Harold E. Hansen, 89, of Sioux City, died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at his home.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with a Masonic service at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Harold was born on July 13, 1924, in Sioux City, to Hans and Dagmar Hansen. He graduated from Jefferson (S.D.) High School and lived in the Sioux City area all his life. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. Upon discharge, he returned to Sioux City and hired out on the Great Northern Railroad as a fireman.
On April 29,1950, Harold married Mary Eik at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City. He worked for the railroad for 40 years, retiring in 1986 from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad as a locomotive engineer.
Harold was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also enjoyed gardening and kept honeybees for 20 years. He was a member and past Master of Morningside Lodge A.F. & A.M. 615. He was a member of the Sioux City Scottish Rite Bodies, Abu Bekr Shrine, Morningside Rose Croix Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and Morningside American Legion Post 697. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 59 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary of Sioux City; daughter, Jean (Chaz) Calhoun of Tomah, Wis.; son, Kris (Laura) Hansen of Redmond, Wash.; grandsons, Carl (Esther Weeks) Calhoun of Grand Junction, Colo., and Paul (Emily Hevey) Calhoun of Franklin, Wis.; sister, Mildred Quigley of Havre, Mont.; and many nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Louise Porterfield and Margaret Quade.
Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Abu Bekr Shriner's Transportation Fund.
