SIOUX CITY -- Harold Donald Sypersma, 88, of Sioux City died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at his residence surrounded by his family.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Third Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. David Choate officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army. Harold was born Aug. 13, 1922, in Hudson, S.D., the son of John and Mamie (Nelson) Sypersma. He attended school in Fairview, S.D., before moving with his family to Bronson, Iowa. He moved to his farm in Sioux City in 1944.
Harold married Margaret Johnson, the love of his life and caregiver, on Sept. 20, 1944. He joined the U.S. Army and served during World War II in Italy. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was proud to be a longtime grower of Jolly Time Popcorn. He farmed and raised livestock his entire life.
He was a member of Third Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed traveling to the Knoxville Nationals with his sons and grandsons. He also enjoyed being outdoors mowing and tending to the farm. He also liked watching westerns, auto racing and sharing stories of the past.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Sypersma of Sioux City; two sons, Harold and Sandra Sypersma Jr. of Sioux City, and Kurt and Sally Sypersma of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Shawn and Sheila Sypersma of Hinton, Iowa, Sheri Sypersma and her fiance, Cody Griffin of Moville, Iowa, Paige Sypersma of Sioux City, and Austin Sypersma of Sioux City; two stepgrandchildren, Callie Jo and Kane O'Hern of Sioux City; a sister, Hilda Wingert of Sioux City; three great-grandchildren, Zach Sypersma, Kayla Sypersma and Chase Sypersma; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mamie Sypersma; two sons, Kenneth and Richard; four brothers, Walter in infancy, John, Charles and Julius; and five sisters, Rosie in infancy, Sylvia, Alice, Idella and Annie.
