Harold Laverne Zellmer

Harold L. Zellmer, 84, of Sioux City died Monday, July 28, 2008, at his residence.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tess Panamarow of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army Reserves. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Harold was born May 30, 1924, in Lawton, Iowa, the son of Paul "Otto" and Bertha (Porsch) Zellmer. He was raised in the Lawton area, attending Banner Township Country School. Following his high school graduation, he entered the U.S. Army in March 1944. He served overseas in the European Theater. He received war injuries later that year and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. He spent his life farming in Woodbury County until his retirement when he moved into town.

He was married to Bernice (Van't Hul) Serbick in 1996 in Sioux City. They made their home in South Sioux City for several years, then moved to Le Mars, Iowa. They returned to Sioux City, living at Northern Hills Assisted Living.

He was a member of the Eagles Club in South Sioux City. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. The couple loved to travel overseas including Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Japan and Hawaii. He was very active at the Senior Center and enjoyed visiting with friends and dancing.

He is survived by his wife, Bea; two daughters and their husbands, Twila and Steven Funk of Moville, Iowa, and Libby and Mike Rath of Wentzville, Mo.; grandchildren, Kelly Funk, Kim Funk, Teressa Funk, Shae Rath, Joe Rath, Dillion Zellmer, Tyler Zellmer, Peter Zellmer, Molly Zellmer and Jill Zellmer; 16 great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Carla and Rick Berding and Connie and Al Lewis; seven stepgrandchildren; 10 great-stepgrandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Peggy Zellmer and Caroline Zellmer; three brothers, Raymond, Alvin and Erwin Zellmer; and a sister, Arlene.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Douglas and Kevin; his first wife, Oneda; a brother, Donald; and a stepdaughter, Pam Noris.
