MERRILL, Iowa -- Harry Barr-James Cornish, 65, of Merrill, Iowa, lost his battle with lung cancer April 18, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital surrounded by family.
Abiding by his wishes, the body will be cremated. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home.
Harry was born to Forrest and Lorna (Brown) Cornish on Aug. 6, 1946. He attended school in the Le Mars, Iowa, area, later graduating from Central High School in Sioux City. He then attended Western Iowa Tech Community College.
Harry worked as a repair technician in the Sioux City area until his health issues forced his retirement. Harry lived the majority of his life in the Sioux City area.
He enjoyed woodworking, camping, and fishing. In Harry's later years, he enjoyed taking his RV on camping trips because he said, "there's never a big rock under my sleeping bag in the RV." Harry loved music and was a good musician in his own right. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, the lights of his life. Harry was relentlessly optimistic, incredibly kind, wise and a gentle soul. Harry will be missed by all who knew him. His sense of humor remained through the final moments of his life.
Left to cherish memories of Harry are his beloved, Connie Gagnon of Merrill; four sons, Michael Cornish of Sioux City, Stephen (Carri) Cornish of Belle Plaine, Minn., Dustin Cornish of Salix, Iowa, and Jonathan "Johnny" Cornish of Salix; a daughter, Joleen (Josh) Choquette of Omaha; sisters, Patty Borgner of Jefferson, S.D., and Janet Warner of Sioux City; a brother, Wayne Albert of Sioux City; eight grandchildren, Stephen Jr., Michelle, Mandi, Timothy, Ryan, Trevor, Hailey, and Nathan; four great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Collin, Owen, and KyLynn; many nieces and nephews; and many others.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents; a brother and his wife, Richard and Rita Cornish; a sister, Barbara Cornish; and two nephews, Steve DeRaad, and Jay Heckt.
