Hazel Brienzo
Sioux City—Hazel “Belle” Brienzo, 91, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with Chaplain Jon Moravec officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.
Hazel “Belle” Brienzo was born March 20, 1918, to Hazen and Esther Matthews. She was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School.
She was married to Harold Wagner in 1936. To this union three children were born, two sons and a daughter. Harold “Wag” Wagner and Belle owned and operate Wags Hut in Leeds for several years. The couple divorced in 1961. She married Tom Brienzo in December 1962. She was later employed with T.S. Martin’s and retired from Younkers Department Store.
She and Tom enjoyed many years of travel throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They spent many summers in Okoboji and winters at their home in Texas. They have lived at Sunrise Retirement Community for 19 years. She enjoyed people and family gatherings.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Tom; a son, Joe (Geneice) Wagner of Sioux City; a daughter, Barbara (Larry) Woolworth of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Krista Wagner of Ackley, Iowa; eight granddaughters, Lisa, Dana, Gina, Lia, Lana, Melissa, Dawn and Gabriel; three grandsons, Joe, Tyler and Hunter; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; a brother-in-law, Don Thorpe of Minnesota; and nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; a son, David Wagner; a sister, Beverly Thorpe; and a nephew, Terry Thorpe.
