Helen Hope Guhin (Hinckley)

Sioux City - Helen Hope Guhin, 85, of Sioux City died peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church, 1735 Morningside Avenue, in Sioux City with the Rev. Tim Bonney officiating. Graveside services will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a brief time for hearing reflections at 6 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City.
Hope was born on Jan. 11, 1928, in Gettysburg, S.D., to Fred and Helen (Nauman) Hinckley. After graduating from Gettysburg High School in 1946, she attended Northern State Teachers College and earned certification in elementary teaching. She taught K-12 vocal music in McLaughlin, S.D., for a year and kindergarten for two years in Aberdeen, S.D., and Sioux City.
Hope married Robert V. Guhin on Aug. 18, 1950, in Gettysburg. They moved to Sioux City in 1951, where he became a teacher and coach at East High School.
Hope devoted her life to supporting her husband's interests, raising three daughters and serving in leadership positions for service organizations including Siouxland Youth Symphony Board, P.E.O., TTT, P.T.A., United Methodist Women, EHS Faculty Wives Club, Morningside Garden Club, Round Table and Mothers Club. In her 62 years of membership at Grace United Methodist Church, the church was the hub of many of Hope's service activities, especially in the music ministry of children where she directed four youth choirs.
In 1981, Hope earned a B.S. in library science from Morningside College and substituted in a number of schools and colleges as interim librarian. She volunteered her time and expertise to the church library at Grace Methodist through the years.
In 1986, Bob and Hope Guhin purchased a summer lake home on West Lake Okoboji, where they were active in the Monarch Cove community. For years, Hope coordinated the music program for the United Methodist Church in Monarch Cove. She treasured the love and friendship of her many friends in Spirit Lake and Sioux City.
Survivors include her sister, Phyllis Balvin of Aberdeen, S.D.; and three daughters, Diana Wooley and her husband, Russell of Sioux City, Barbara Moore and her husband, Terry of St. Louis, Mo., and Kristi Smith and her husband, Brad of Des Moines. She cherished her grandchildren, Cassie Slater and her husband, Eric, James Wooley, Angela Thayer and her husband, Lane, Rebecca Smith, Brian Smith, Staci Smith, Andrew Smith, Jenna Smith; stepgranddaughters, Wendy Hershey and her husband, Neil, Marty Johnson and her husband, Eric, Melissa Ruhrer and her husband, Craig, Kristin Whitsel and her husband, Rollie; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Guhin; parents, Fred and Helen Hinckley of Gettysburg; and siblings, Lavelle Romito and Fred Roland Hinckley.
Memorials may be given in Hope Guhin’s name to the music ministry of Grace United Methodist Church or the non-profit Lamb Arts Regional Theatre education program.
