Helen F. Kurtz, 95, of Sioux City died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at Sunrise Retirement Community following a brief illness.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Tom LoVan officiating. The body was cremated. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Cushing Cemetery, Cushing, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Larkin Northside Chapel.
Helen was born Nov. 18, 1911, in Cushing, Iowa, the daughter of William and Katie L. (Volkert) Kurtz. She was raised in Cushing, where she attended school. She graduated from Cushing High School in 1929. She then attended the National Business Training School in Sioux City. She lived in Sioux City for a brief time, then returned to Cushing. She lived in Cushing until 1972, when she moved to Holstein, Iowa. She then moved to Sioux City in 1998.
After graduating from the business school, she worked in a Sioux City bank and in the office of a ladies apparel store. In Cushing, she worked in the general merchandise store, managing the sundry department. She then worked for the Holstein Bank in Cushing, and continued to work for the bank after moving to Holstein. She retired in 1977.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Cushing, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Holstein and was a current member of Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City. She taught Sunday School at St. John Lutheran Church. She was a wonderful seamstress. She enjoyed reading and corresponding with family and friends.
She is survived by her cousins, Frank and Connie Hoppe of Kingsley, Iowa, and William and Dana Volkert of Gresham, Ore.; special friends, Jacque Grabouski and the Rev. Tom LoVan; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant brother.
Memorials in her name may be directed to the endowment fund for Morningside Lutheran Church.
