SIOUX CITY -- Helen Marie Murphy, 83, of Sioux City died Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Helen was born July 1, 1926, in Sioux City, the daughter of Olaus and Gertrude (Baxter) Nelson. She was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1944.
On May 24, 1947, she married William R. Murphy in Sioux City. The couple lived most of their married life in Sioux City. Bill died on April 11, 1990, in Kailua, Hawaii. She worked as a bookkeeper for Tastee Inn and Out for many years. She also did taxes out of her home.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She enjoyed cooking, traveling and loved to dance. She was a very organized person and was in charge of planning many of her class reunions. The most important part of her life was spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Mike and Jan Murphy of Kailua, Hawaii; two daughters, Sharon Johnson of Omaha and Deb and Craig Tanner of Sioux City; her loving companion, Vern Watkins and his son, Doug; her grandchildren, Jenny and Shawn Thompson, Sarah and Willie Chillous, Sean and Brandy Murphy and Austin Tanner; five great-grandchildren; her brother, Harold Nelson and his companion, Bernice; and five nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband.
A memorial had been established in her name and may be directed to the family.
