Helene Faye Lanegan, 73, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2008, following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Riverside Lutheran Church, with Pastor Charles Wolff officiating. She will be laid to rest in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Berkemier Chapel.
Helene was born Oct. 7, 1934. She was the daughter of Wayne and Mary (Rams) Gaskins. She was raised with her surviving sister, Lorraine, wife of Jim Schroder of Sioux City. Helene was a 1953 graduate of Leeds High School.
Helene married Darrell Lanegan on May 5, 1957. They raised four children together during their 50 years of marriage. She was employed for 27 years at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator. She was also employed at Goodwill Industries, Gateway, Miller Liquor Store and as a teachers aide at Riverside School.
She was a lifelong resident of the Riverside area of Sioux City. She was a 70-year member of Riverside Lutheran Church, a member of the Ruth Church Circle and enjoyed her time with the church's quilting guild. She was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Helene spent her spare time quilting, embroidering, crocheting, gardening, camping, traveling and was active in her grandchildren's activities. She was a "fisherman's companion."
Survivors include her husband, Darrell; a son, Craig (Anita) of Sioux City; a daughter, Linda (Tom) Gossage of Glendale, Ariz.; a son, Gregg of Sioux City; and a daughter, RaeLynn (Brent) Wall of Akron, Iowa. Helene will be greatly missed by her surviving grandchildren, Cody Gossage, Alicia Kratke and her mother, Donna Kratke, Garrett and Casey Wall; and her dear nieces and nephews.
