Herbert D. Rhine, 87, of Lawton died Sunday, April 12, 2015, at his home.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes in Moville, Iowa.
Herbert was born on April 17, 1927, in Daulphin County, Hershey, Pa., the son of Roy and Jennie (Strouphauer) Rhine. He graduated from Hershey High School in 1944 and worked for the Hershey Chocolate Corporation. Herbert enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was called to active duty on May 19, 1945, as an air crewman in the U.S. Naval Air Corps. He was honorably discharged in September 1949.
Herbert married Lucille Grigg at the Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Md. on April 2, 1949. They lived in Arlington, Va., until 1955, when they moved to Lawton. Two children were born, named Joyce Marie and Daniel Edgar. Herbert worked in the sheet metal trade.
He loved to fish, read, play cards and bowl. Herbert was an American Legion member for more than 50 years.
Survivors include his daughter, Joyce (Jack) Shumansky of Burnsville, Minn.; a son, Daniel Rhine of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; granddaughter, Jaime Shumansky of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two great-grandchildren, Haley and Aubrey; and a brother, Donald Rhine of Harrisburg, Pa.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lucille; grandson, JD Shumansky; and a brother, Roy Rhine.
