Howard D. Cheever

SIOUX CITY -- Howard D. Cheever, 88, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City. The Rev. Gary Snyder will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a rosary at 4 p.m., the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Howard was born on Sept. 3, 1923, in Sioux City, the son of Donald and Eileen (Olson) Cheever. He was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1942. Howard served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. He was stationed in Saipan.
Howard married Rose M. Rielly on April 23, 1949, in Rock Valley, Iowa. Rose died on March 17, 1989, in Sioux City. Howard worked for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad for 39 years, working as a switchman, yardman and yardmaster.
He was a longtime member of St. Michael Catholic Church and had served as a director at the church. He was a member of Opus Spiritus Sancti and volunteered at Hospice of Siouxland. He enjoyed playing cards and belonged to the American Legion. Dad enjoyed family and friends and sent his love through greeting cards for all occasions. We will miss his hugs and kisses and Hallmark will miss his business.
He is survived by six children, Patrick Cheever and his friend, De Etta Riley of Sioux City, Michael and Gayle Cheever of South Sioux City, Mary Ann and David Pick of Merrill, Iowa, Timothy and Teresa Cheever of Firestone, Colo., Kay and Bob Prybilla of Mound, Minn., Jane and Steve Alpers of Lynnwood, Wash.; 18 grandchildren, Jenny, Sarah, Nick, Jason, Kristy, Cassie, D.J., Angie, Danny, Dusty, Jessica, Joe, Paul, Rebecca, Jon, Laura, Abigail and Rielly; 14 great-grandchildren; and the Holy Spirit Sisters of India.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rosie; and a brother, Buss.
