Howard Ross McLarnan

MOVILLE, Iowa -- Howard R. McLarnan, 87, of Moville passed away Sunday, May 11, 2008, at a hospital in Melbourne, Fla.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Moville United Methodist Church followed by a luncheon for friends and family at the church hall. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Moville. Condolences may be sent to the McLarnan Family, 302 South Second Street, Moville, IA. 51039.

Howard was born Feb. 5, 1921, in Moville, the son of Chet and Margaret (Longhorn) McLarnan. He grew up on the family farm located eight miles southeast of Moville. He attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Moville High School, where he played baseball and football. On his way to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps, he was called back to Moville to care for his mother and assume the responsibility of working the farm after his father's untimely death.

He married Margaret Horton in 1947 and after the sale of the farm in 1974, they moved into his mother's home on Second Street. An accomplished carpenter, he along with his sons, built and renovated more than 30 homes in the Moville area, which included custom carpentry for the United Methodist Church and building the parsonage.

An avid golfer, he was a charter member and former president and board member of The Meadows Golf Club, where he continued to play up through this past year. He loved to spend his time doing woodworking, cabinetry, drawing and sketching. A regular at Misty's Restaurant, he enjoyed the company of his longtime friends and established a strong reputation as a kind and caring man.

A loving father, he is survived by a son and his wife, Mark and Sandy McLarnan of Norfolk, Neb.; a daughter and her husband, Marsha (McLarnan) and John Solheim of Redfield, S.D.; a son and his wife, Kevin and Barbara McLarnan of Palm Bay, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Nicole (McLarnan) Bowen, Brandi and Brent Solheim, Amanda, Amber, Erin and Sean McLarnan; and a great-grandchild, Rylee McLarnan.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret; his parents, Chet and Margaret; and his brothers, Rex, Mark and Paul.
