SIOUX CITY -- Howard Galen Wilson, 89, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Scott Squires officiating. Burial will be in Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home. Howard Galen Wilson was born May 31, 1920, in Sioux City. He was raised on a farm near Dakota City. He was baptized at Salem Lutheran Church. He attended Meridian Country School and Dakota City High School.
Howard was inducted in the U.S. Army on Jan. 22, 1943. He went into active service on July 6, 1943, and departed aboard a ship for Europe on Aug. 16, 1944. He arrived in England on Aug. 26, 1944. He was shipped across the English Channel to Normandy beginning combat on D-Day with the initial assault. He served with Company F, 317 Infantry, continuously until he and others were captured in Nanci, France. He was taken to Stalag 6a in Germany and later to Stalag 7a in Germany, being required to repair railroad tracks and buildings. Sugar beet top soup was the primary meal except on Christmas, when he received pea soup and dry bread. One time he got a piece of Limburger cheese but only once. He said he didn't get much to eat period.
Rescued by U.S. troops, he was shipped to France for medical care and then by hospital ship to Fort Dix, N.J. he was honorably discharged on Nov. 24, 1945, at Fort Francis E. Warren, Wyo. Howard was in active engagement in Europe for more than a year before being captured. He was a prisoner for seven months and four days prior to being rescued.
He worked for the Sioux City Stockyards for more than 38 years.
He was a member of Crescent Park United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. He was a long-time member of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Iowa, Lodge 615.
Howard was a loving, dedicated, hardworking and compassionate husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, June; daughter, Jennifer; son, Pierce; granddaughter, Ashlee; and daughter-in-law, Shawn.
