Hugh M. Payne Jr., 60, of Sioux City, died Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center-Sioux City.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, with the Rev. Bill Yanney officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Funeral Home.
Hugh was born March 31, 1954, in Long Beach, Calif., the son of Hugh Payne Sr. and Patricia (Krabbenhoeft) Van Eaton. He grew up in San Diego and graduated from Mission Bay High School.
Hugh married Nancee Burns Oct. 5, 1974, in Sioux City. They made their home in Sioux City.
Hugh worked for Sioux City Milk Producers, the Sioux City Journal, Certified Testing Services for 13 years, and for the last 14 years as lab manager for Iowa Department of Transportation.
Hugh loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He raised quarter horses for more than 30 years and was a member of the Quarter Horse Association. Hugh enjoyed cooking. Smoking meat and making salsa were his favorites.
Survivors include his wife, Nancee Payne of Sioux City; two sons, Hugh III (Misty) Payne of Bronson, Iowa, and Keith (Natalie) Payne of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Vanessa Harvey, Spencer Payne, Addie Payne and Kila Payne; mother, Patricia Van Eaton of San Diego; father, Hugh Sr. (Marge) Payne of Tulsa, Okla.; two sisters, Susan Booth and Cathy Salazar, both of San Diego; three brothers-in-law, Kevin (Genie) Burns, Curtis (Mary) Burns, and Tom (Susan) Burns; a niece, Shawna Smith; six nephews, Scott Booth, Mark Salazar, Nicholas Salazar, Kie Ahrens, Barry Howard and Dan Burns; extended family, Shawn and Emily McCulley and family of Sioux City; and many other friends.
He was preceded in death by a nephew, Jared Burns; and special friends, Paul Miller and Jim Forch
