SIOUX CITY -- Hugh John Vaughan Jr., 82, of Sioux City died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at his residence.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
Hugh was born Oct. 14, 1927, in Omaha, the son of Hugh Sr. and Myrna Vaughan. He graduated from Technical High School in Omaha. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1944, and qualified as a fireman first class and as a machinist's mate third class. He served on the USS Oakland and was honorably discharged on Oct. 11, 1949. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, retired and then began to work for Armour and Co. in Omaha. In 1970, he was transferred to Sioux City, where he retired in 1979.
He married Marlene Louise Abbott in 1950 and was widowed in 1972. On March 7, 1975, he married Mary Lou Stabile. They celebrated their 34th anniversary this year.
He was a friend of Bill W for 30 years and held various positions including general service representative, district committee member and Area 24 treasurer, secretary, vice chair, chairperson and delegate to general service office. He was a volunteer at Siouxland Inner Group Central office and held various positions on the board until 2005.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid Cornhusker, Green Bay Packer and South Park fan. He loved his huge blended family and the chaos and fun that came with it. He gave generously with his time and made a positive impact on countless lives.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; seven children, George Laursen, Gin (Tom) Kautzky, Linda (Garry) Dragoo, Cheryl (Rod) Rosenthal, Eric (Carolyn) Laursen, Julie (Pat) Humphrey and Larry Vaughan. He was grandfather to 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Chris Laursen; and a great-grandson, Trey.
