Iola A. McConnell, 100, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at Sunrise Retirement Community following a brief illness.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Martha Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Westfork Township Cemetery, Climbing Hill, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to

Mrs. McConnell was born June 10, 1907, on a farm north of Hornick, Iowa, to Henry and Polly (Kendall) Hanner Sr. She attended school in Holly Springs, Iowa.
She was united in marriage to Edward Martens in 1933. They farmed in the Bronson, Iowa, area. He passed away in 1958. She married Harvey "Mack" McConnell on July 7, 1967, in Elk Point, S.D. He passed away in 1978.
She and Mack were members of the Siouxland Gem and Mineral Society and they traveled extensively in the 48 states and Canada. She worked at Countryside Nursing Home and after retiring was very active in volunteer work.
She was a talented artist who enjoyed playing the piano, organ, drawing, painting, sewing and craft work.She is survived by her stepdaughter, Sue Ann Brugett of Bonita Springs, Fla.; a stepson and his wife, Bill and Louise McConnell of Sioux City; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; a son, Dean Martens; five brothers; and a sister.
