Irene M. Wangen, 91, of Adel, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, at a nursing home in Adel.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with Pastor Roger Graf of Morningside Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation, with the family present, will be 3 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Irene was born April 2, 1916, on a farm five miles north of Ireton, Iowa, to Roger and Stella (Brown) Grau. She attended and graduated from Ireton High School with the class of 1933. She entered the National Business Training School, from which she graduated in 1934. After graduation, she was employed by Wilson Trailer Co. in Sioux City.
She married Gordon Wangen on Dec. 13, 1945, at First Presbyterian Church in Sioux City. In the mid-1950s, the couple owned and operated Gateway Motel and Texaco Gas Station in Rapid City, S.D., for five years. They then moved back to Sioux City. Irene was then employed with the Woodbury County Clerk of District Court. Gordon passed away suddenly on Oct. 30, 1994.
Irene and her husband were members of Morningside Presbyterian Church in Sioux City. She enjoyed bowling and playing cards. She also loved country western music and dancing. As a young girl, Irene played the piano at town dances. In later years, she played the organ in her home. She enjoyed spending time with her coffee club group at Timothy's Restaurant. She also enjoyed doing her puzzle books and visiting with her friends.
Survivors include two daughters, Deborah and husband, Dennis Lang of Clive, Iowa, and Terry Tomlin of Canal Winchester, Ohio; grandchildren, Andrew Lang and wife, Andrea of Des Moines, Katie Lang and boyfriend, Josh Woodard of Woodward, Iowa, and Kristi Schiller of Norwood, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Rhonda Jo Wangen; a sister, Evelyn Imbrock; and a brother, Dwayne Grau.
