Iris Irene Anderson (Witek)

SIOUX CITY | Iris I. Anderson, 87, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at her residence surrounded by her family.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Iris was born on Feb. 11, 1925, in Albany, N.Y., to Joseph and Blanche Witek. She attended grade school and high school in New York City. She later attended Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City.
On Feb. 18, 1943, she married Kenneth Carl Anderson in New York. Following her marriage, she moved to Hawarden, Iowa. In 1969, the family moved to Sioux City, where she had been a resident ever since. Kenneth passed away on March 20, 1998, in Sioux City.
Iris began her working career at the Hotel New Yorker. She later worked at Otis Radio Shop in Hawarden, St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City, along with other dales positions. In the early 1990s, she published an autobiography of her life story, "Destiny," which to this day makes her children proud.
She was a stranger to no one and a friend to many. She will always be loved and greatly missed. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She enjoyed family, telling stories, traveling, reading, camping and dancing. It would be remiss not to mention her thorough enjoyment of the casino slots machines and her love of scratch tickets, but most of all enjoying life and taking classes.
Survivors include her children, Kathy and Mitch Ayers of Lincoln, Neb., Kent Anderson of Sioux City, Marla Desy of Sioux City, Kerry Case of Sioux City, Tammie and Craig Torngren of Sioux City, and Michael and Janine Anderson of Phoenix, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a sister, Elenor; two sons-in-law, Steve Case and Mike Desy; and a daughter-in-law, Marti Anderson.
