Irma Eilers, 99, died Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City, IA.
A funeral service will be 11:00 am Saturday, April 17, 2021, at Morningside Lutheran Church with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
Irma Mae Gronemeyer, the daughter of George and Ethel (Schuyler) Gronemeyer was born April 2, 1922, in Akron, IA. She graduated from high school in Le Mars, IA in 1939, and went on to earn her teaching certificate at Westmar University. Irma then taught in a one-room country school until 1945.
On February 27, 1945, Irma was united in marriage with Edwin G. Eilers in Craig, IA. They were married for 56 years. Edwin died October 10, 2001. Irma was employed at J.C. Penney as a retail associate for 30 years, retiring in 1987.
Irma was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church, the Morning Glory Quilters, and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, and watching the birds in the yard. The couple also traveled extensively after their retirements.
Irma is survived by her children, Jerry (Diane) Eilers of Nevada, IA, Marlene (Rev. Wendell) Wahlin of Henning, MN; six grandchildren, Tom (Kirsty) Eilers, David (Hannah) Eilers, Dan (Laura) Eilers, Joshua Wahlin, Jessica (Derrick) Buls, and Elizabeth (Blaise) McPhearson; 13 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two siblings, Wayne Gronemeyer and Shirley Ludwigs.
The family has requested that memorials be directed to Morningside Lutheran Church.
