J. Warren Nelson

SIOUX CITY -- J. Warren Nelson, 87, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital surrounded by his family.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lloyd Grant officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 6 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com .

Warren was born May 11, 1921, in Oakland, Neb., to J.P.M. Nelson and Laura (Hansen) Nelson. He attended Palmquist rural school and graduated from Oakland Public High School in May 1938. He served in the U.S. Army in AGermany during World War II from 1945 to 1947. After returning from military service, he returned to Oakland.

He married Muriel Sandquist on Oct. 14, 1947. To this union two sons, John Timothy and Ward Brian, and a daughter, Lori Ann, were born. The couple farmed west of Oakland from 1950 to 1960, when they moved to Sioux City. He was employed in residential construction until 1996. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2000. He became a resident of Sunrise Retirement Community in August 2005.

He is survived by his wife, Muriel Nelson of Sioux City; two sons, John Timothy and Kathleen Nelson of Daejon, Korea, and Ward Brian and Paula Nelson of Ankeny, Iowa; a daughter, Lori Ann and Richard Salem of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Laurence and Allegra Nelson of Buffalo, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant grandson.
