Moville, Iowa - Jack W. Bremer, 84, of Moville died on Friday, June 14, 2013, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville, with the Rev. Barbara Spalding officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery at Moville. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church. The McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home is handling the services.
Jack was born on Sept. 21, 1928, in Sioux City. He was the son of Edmund and Cora (Riser) Bremer. He grew up in rural Moville and attended country school through 8th grade. He graduated from Moville High School in 1946, where he played football and baseball. He and his twin bother, Gene, signed with the N.Y. Yankees and played in their farm system for three years. They played with the Cedar Rapids Rockets. He then returned to Moville to farm with his family.
On Jan. 17, 1954, he married Darlene Smith in Emmetsburg, Iowa. To this union, five children were born. Jack was a farmer, raising livestock for many years. His last 15 years were spent working with his brother, nephew and many friends at Sioux City Tarp Co. Darlene passed away on April 29, 1974.
Jack always had a good word to say and a smile on his face. He was an avid baseball and softball fan. He enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage, fishing and attending sporting events that his grandchildren were involved in. He was a member of the Meadows Country Club, where he served one term as president in 1974. He was a member of the Masonic Temple, the Arlington Bridge Club and Trinity Lutheran Church.
He is survived by three children and their spouses, Vicki and Bill Hulse of Moville, Johnny and Debbie Bremer of Moville, and Sandy and Jeff Hummel of Schleswig, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Billy Hulse, Whitney Hulse, Andy (Ivy) Bremer, Tyler Bremer, Jordan Bremer, Heath (Maho) Hummel, Shelby Hummel and Brandy Hummel; one great-grandchild, Cora Jo Bremer, his brother, Don (Sue) Bremer, in-laws, Lila Bremer, Jalene (Glenn) Bridenbaugh, Gene (Suzy) Smith, Ed (Mary) Smith and Joel (Verleen) Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Darlene; his twin brother, Gene; two infant sons, Randy and Kirk; and his in-laws, Victor and Lillian Smith.
