Jack Dam, 87, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Sunrise Retirement Community.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. James United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel. Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Jack was born on April 12, 1927, in Sioux City, to Jack and Estella (Sheetz) Dam. He graduated from Central High School in 1945. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1945, where he served for 14 months, then signed up for the Reserves.
He was united in marriage to Laura Janson on May 31, 1948, in Sioux City. Jack and Laura spent 66 wonderful years together. They lived in McCook Lake, S.D., for 20 years and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Jack was the sales manager for the Des Moines Register Newspaper in Sioux City for 20 years. He was a Realtor for 33 years. His career included being the broker for Homefinders Realty, Jack Dam Realty, and being a partner in Gateway Realty until retiring in 2002. Jack was honored as Realtor of the Year and also served as president of the Board of Relators. Jack also owned Homeline Mobile Home Sales with his father, Jack Sr.
He was a member of St. James and McCook Lake United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, storyteller, artist, and loved to travel. Jack always loved people, and had a wonderful sense of humor.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Laura of Sioux City; three daughters, Jacqueline Butler, Barbara (Tim) Hattig, and Karen (Doug W.) Johnson, all of Sioux City; two sons, Brian (Kristine) Dam of Sioux City, and Craig (Gina) Dam of McCook Lake; 11 grandchildren, David (Amber) Slothower, Diann Slothower, Russell Hattig, Ryan Hattig, Anne Johnson, Lee (Jacey) Johnson, Rob Dam, Sara Dam, T.J. Dam, Brady Dam, and Katie Dam; and four great-grandchildren, Christopher Slothower, Brianna Slothower, Sofia Johnson, and Russell Hattig.
He is preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Richard; and in-laws, Louis and Esther Janson.
Memorials may be made to the family and will later be designated to several charities.
