Jack Walters passed to his heavenly life in his own home in Sioux City, IA, on April 16, 2025, at 98 years old.
Jackie Frank Walters was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on May 10, 1926, to Dave and Ruth (Wolfe) Walters.
He was raised on a farm between Charles City and Greene, Iowa. Jack married Patricia Jane Timblin on December 3, 1943. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 serving in WWII and the Korean War on the USS South Dakota and USS Princeton. The “artwork” on his arms confirmed his pride and commitment to Navy and country.
Jack and Pat made their home in Sioux City while Jack worked at Armours, Swifts and then his beloved career as a livestock trucker began in 1955. Logging at least 7 1/2 million miles over 60 years, Jack hauled for Foreman Truck Line, Silver Creek and West Livestock also transporting new trailers for Wilson Trailer Company. Jack believed in hard work and was employed until age 89. He then kept active by walking daily and gardening as long as possible.
Jack and Pat raised 4 children in the Morningside area of Sioux City and worked hard to ensure his family’s needs were met. More than once, he surprised Pat with brand new cars. He was the guy that bought that one 50-pound box of candy in the window at Jarvis Candy on Valentine’s Day every year.
Despite driving for a living, Jack drove the family to California yearly for vacation. The family enjoyed boating, fishing and homes on the Missouri River.
Jack leaves a legacy of giving to family and loving his dogs, but also supported many causes - especially the American Legion in Merrill of which he was a proud member for 74 years. His generous donations contributed to the American Legion’s Veteran’s Memorial in Merrill where his name is listed first.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Patricia and son Marine Corp PFC Jim Walters who was killed in action in Vietnam. Left to cherish his memories are daughters Jackie (Larry - deceased) Weil, Sioux City, IA; Carol (Jerry) Sponder, South Sioux City, NE; Cheryl (Tim) Swanson, Lexington, SC; 9 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
Visitation with family present will be held on Wednesday April 23 from 6-7 pm followed by a service and reception at Christy Smith Funeral Home Morningside Chapel. Burial will take place Thursday April 24 at 10 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Sioux City.
