Sioux City - Jacqueline Marie Smith, 89, of Sioux City, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. James United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ryan Christenson will officiate. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a family sharing at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Jacqueline was born on May 4, 1924, in Sioux City, the daughter of Leo and Marie Isabel Stroupe. She was raised in Sioux City.
Jacqueline was married to Merle Smith for 63 years. Jacqueline and Merle worked tirelessly for the rights of the disabled. They were especially devoted to get curb cuts on all sidewalks, so they would be accessible to wheel chairs. They started the Siouxland Committee for the Handicapped and traveled through out the state. They received several awards from the state of Iowa for their efforts. Merle passed away in Sioux City in 2003.
Jacqueline was a longtime member of St. James United Methodist Church and taught Bible study at the church. Jacqueline loved painting with watercolors, gardening and especially growing flowers. In Jacqueline’s family, the name Marie has been carried on for six generations.
She is survived by her daughter, Merlyne M. Smith of Sioux City; her son, Michael and his wife, Vicki of Wadena, Minn.; two grandchildren, Daniel Smith, and Christine (Matthew) Cappetta; three great-grandchildren, Emma Marie, Sophia and Bella; and her good friends, Nina and Pete Cropley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband.
Memorials may be directed to St. James United Methodist Church.
