James Gerard "Jim" Beacom, 62, of McCook Lake died unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, in Elizabeth City, N.J.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Jefferson, S.D. The Rev. Robert Lacey will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Jim was born on Feb. 21, 1952, in Sioux City, the son of Henry and Ruby (Berg) Beacom. He graduated from Heelan High School in 1970. Jim then became a respiratory therapist. He attended Western Iowa Tech School of Nursing and earned his RN. He later attended the Abbott Northwestern Nurse Anesthetist Program in Minneapolis. Jim worked at St. Luke’s Hospital and then for the Siouxland Surgical Center before returning to St. Luke’s, where he worked for Anesthesia Consultants.
On July 14, 1973, Jim married Kathy Bernard in Sioux City. He married Debra Alexa on March 6, 1999, in Sioux City.
He was a member of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church in Dakota Dunes. He was very active at the church and served on several committees. He was a member of the National Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the Iowa Association of Nurse Anesthetists, National Association of Respiratory Therapists and the Iowa Association of Respiratory Therapists. Jim loved swimming, boating, fishing, traveling and he was an avid coin collector. The most important part of Jim’s life was his family and friends. Jim was a man who was larger than life and lived it to the fullest. He will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by his wife, Debra of McCook Lake; two sons, James (Jennifer) of Sioux City, and Jason of Sioux City; three stepdaughters, Karen Willoughby of Sioux City, Amber (Matthew) Dickman of Japan, and Ashley (Joseph) Verdoorn of Sioux City; 13 grandchildren, James III, Grace, Liam, Mary, Elizabeth, Christian, LaRena, Sophia, McKenna, Davey, Finley, Alexa and Genevieve; his brothers, Henry of Lakeland, Fla., and Mark and Bob, both of Sioux City; and his sister, Marilyn (Charles) Whitson of Jenks, Okla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jillian; and three brothers, Pat, Donald and Tom.
