Sioux City, IA – James T. “Jim” Horan, 89, passed away Wednesday January 18, 2023, at MercyOne Siouxland in Sioux City, IA, after a brief illness of cancer.
A memorial service will be 1:00 pm Saturday January 28, 2023, at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel, 1801 Morningside Ave., with visitation one hour prior. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at

Jim was born January 11, 1934, in Willmar, MN. Jim was the seventh child of John B. Horan and Henrietta C. (Bartelson) Horan. When Jim was two years old, the family moved to Sioux City, where Jim lived the remainder of his life. Jim attended grade school and graduated from Central High School in 1952. He excelled at sports.
After high school, he attended the University of South Dakota on a football scholarship for one year and then joined the Army. He was in the Korean Conflict. During this time, Jim and Marian Queen were married in 1953. To this union, five boys were born, Dale, Gale, Mark, John, and Jim.
Jim and Barbara Martensen were married in 1980, until Barb’s death in 2009.
On July 17, 2013, Jim and Annette “Nettie” Wilson were married at Lake Tahoe, CA. Jim held several jobs in Sioux City. Some of these companies include Graham Brake, Fruehauf Trailer, and Siouxland Trailer Sales.
Jim enjoyed all sports during his lifetime. In his later years, he learned to garden. He enjoyed road trips and vacations with family.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Bill; four sisters, Ann, Gerry, Kay, and Bette; two wives, Marian and Barb; and grandson in law, Bill Sedelmeier.
Jim is survived by his wife, Annette “Nettie” Horan of Sioux City; sons, Dale (Dianne) and Gale (Judy) of Sioux Falls, SD, Mark (Gale) of Piedmont, SD, John (Beth) of Sioux City, and Jim (Linda) of Omaha, NE; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two step-sons; three step-daughters; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
