SIOUX CITY -- James R. Ehlers, 73, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at his residence.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mark Lutheran Church, with Pastor John Hagberg officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Jim was born April 7, 1936, in Waterbury, Neb., to Henry and Elsie (Ritze) Ehlers. The family then moved to Dixon, Neb., and later to Wayne, Neb., where he grew up and attended school, graduating from Wayne Prep High School. He went on to attend Wayne State College, earning his degree in education. Jim later obtained his master's in education from the University of South Dakota, and completed 30 plus additional credit hours. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.
Jim married Deanna Baier on July 7, 1957, in Wayne. After their marriage, they lived in Wayne and Stanton, Neb., for two years. They moved to Sioux City in 1960, where they have since resided.
Jim taught at West Junior High School from 1960 to 1983, and Woodrow Wilson Middle School from 1983 to 1999. In 1984, he was honored as the Sioux City Teacher of the Year, and was runner-up for the state of Iowa. He enjoyed substitute teaching following his retirement. He was a member of Sioux City Retired Educators.
Jim was a longtime member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, where he served on church council and numerous committees, was a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and a worship assistant. Family and friends were very important to Jim. He participated in and attended his children's and grandchildren's many events throughout the years. Jim and Deanna enjoyed traveling with close friends and family.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Deanna Ehlers of Sioux City; three children, Steve and Beth (Kuehn) Ehlers of Mason City, Iowa, Pam Ehlers of Sioux City, and Deb Roe of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Jennifer Ehlers, Kristen Ehlers, Stephanie Ehlers and Robert Roe; a brother, Marvin Ehlers of West Point, Neb.; a sister, Marian and Ivan Creighton of Wayne, Neb.; a sister-in-law, Norma Ehlers of Wayne, Neb.; numerous nieces and nephews; and many close friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Melvin, Raymond and Alvin Ehlers; and sister, Laverne Thesenga.
