SIOUX CITY -- James F. "Matt" Dillon, 64, of Sioux City passed away on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, at his residence under the care of his devoted wife and with the help of Hospice.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Church of the Nativity in Sioux City, with the Revs. Jerome Dillon, Jerry Feierfeil and John McGuirk officiating. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday in St. John's Cemetery at Jackson, Neb. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Jim was born March 22, 1944, in Sioux City, to Joe and Margaret (Rohan) Dillon. He grew up and attended country school in Newcastle, Neb., until age 8. Then the family moved to a farm near Hubbard, Neb. He later attended Sacred Heart School in Emerson, Neb., graduating in 1962.
In 1967, he married Jane O'Neill at St. John's Catholic Church in Willis, Neb. The couple then moved to Sioux City and have been residents ever since. Jim was employed for 30 years as a livestock salesman with the Sioux City Stockyards. He worked for several commission firms, including Rice Brothers, Wood Brothers, Producers and Scott. He was later employed for 10 years by Knoepfler Chevrolet and then for the past two years by the Farmers Co-op in Hinton, Iowa.
Jim was a member of Nativity Men's Club. He was an avid fan of sprint car racing and enjoyed cooking, collecting John Deere memorabilia, reading about history and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Jim served in the U.S. Army and National Guard from 1965 to 1971. He was also a member of Harty-McNally American Legion Post 175 in Jackson, Neb. He enjoyed making his famous chili for the annual Legion Thanksgiving fundraiser.
Survivors include his wife, Jane; four children, Randy and Stephanie Dillon of Raymore, Mo., Amy and James Robillard of North Branch, Minn., Curt and Michelle Dillon of Iowa City, Iowa, and Abby and Kevin Pullman of Lino Lakes, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; three brothers, Joseph "Pat" and JoAnn Dillon of St. George, Utah, Jack and Debbie Dillon of South Sioux City, and Father Jerome Dillon of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Margaret Dillon of Tucson, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
