James "Greek" Mehess

Jim “Greek” Mehess, 81, passed away, Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 29, 2023, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes Resource Center, 1819 Morningside Avenue. Jim, the third of four children, was born August 25, 1941, to George and Delila (Gifford) Mehess in Sioux City where he lived his entire life. He was a partner in a salvage business with his father. He was also a talented artist renowned for his custom automotive paint and pinstriping. Jim loved classic cars and was a founding member of the Vintage Coaches, Ltd car club in Sioux City. He liked to joke that he could sniff out “old iron” miles away. Jim also loved animals, especially cats, and spent his life rescuing homeless, injured, and abandoned animals. The number of lives saved over his lifetime is well into the hundreds. Jim was well known for his stories, pranks, and sense of humor.

His stories, laughter and bear hugs will truly be missed by his family and friends.

Jim is survived by wife Linda Krause, his children Jamie Mehess of Long Beach, CA, Jana (Kent) Howe of Decatur, IL, Jason Mehess of Mokena, IL, Nick (Kim) Krause of Rochester, MN and Tressa (Rich) Hinrichs of Roseville, MN; brothers, John Mehess of CA and Bill Mehess of CO; grandchildren Bari Rogers, Nick (Laura) Rogers, Aaron Rogers, Sophie Howe, Mary Howe, Nikolas Ruzas, Christopher Ruzas, Jeremy Ruzas, Alexander Mehess, Elizabeth Mehess, Collin Krause, Dawson Krause, and Caiden Krause; two great-grandchildren, Sam Rogers and Wesley Ruzas; and many, many friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, George and Delila Mehess; sister Georgia Matheakis; and grandson Michael Ruzas.
